Pest identification
and confirmation—Curly top
Immature, deformed fruit are a characteristic sign of curly top. Infected fruit have a dull surface unlike
the glossy skin of normal fruit. The leaf vein curls and turns purple. However, in some tomato varieties
leaves characteristically roll upward when they are perfectly healthy. Symptoms may be confused with a
deficiency of phosphorus or a mosaic virus. Plants with curly top can be distinguished from a mosaic virus
by the red brown phloem tissue and by the downward rather than the upward curling of leaves caused by
mosaic viruses.
