How to Manage Pests

Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Sticky red sphere traps

Sticky red spheres have been used to estimate adult maggot abundance in some commercial orchards and have also been successfully employed as a control for these pests in small orchards or backyards. Traps are available in gardening stores or in gardening catalogs.

You can make your own traps using a red wooden or plastic ball similar in size to an apple. Attach a wire and treat the trap with a sticky substance such as Tangle-trap. Traps can be hung with apple essence dispensers. Six to ten balls per tree hung on the outside of trees will help provide control.
